Originally starting out as a English teacher, in 1930, Siskind found his love for photography and became a documentary photographer. 1933 was the year he joined the Film and Photo league New York, who commented on the need to better social conditions in modern society.

After a fallout with the group, Siskind left and continued to develop his new and abstract way of photography.

When I look at his artworks the subject seems familiar but it's as though I'm seeing a new aspect of it.

I'm drawn to the textures, lines and forms he is able to capture.

Relating to duality, I'd like to use these decayed and fragmented surfaces to portray the beauty they possess when we connect them to emotions.

Like Siskind finding 'emotional joy and tension' in the process, I also want to show this in my collages.
