24th Septemeber 2020
Today was the first day I tried Oil painting.Â
I was not aware of how great they were at blending colour however that comes with its cons.
I did a small test painting of a class jug. I started painting the subject first and when i came to the end i did the background. However i think i would have preferred to have painted the background first to have a more cohesive outcome.
I found it enjoyable but time consuming to mix the colours. I know that if I'm to paint i need to give my self adequate time to correctly mix the shades i need.
28th September 2020
Oil painting. Today is my second attempt.
I've since learnt how moveable the paint is and how slowly it dries compared to acrylic paint.
This time i started with the background. here i stumbled upon my first problem. Because the paints are moveable and dry slowly, the red background would mix with the white colour of my subject. If I'm going to paint the background first i need to do it in advance.
October 1st 2020
I visited the Manchester art gallery. Since there are restrictions you have to book online before entering. I went yesterday but wasn't aware i had to book. however today i did. i also went to the whitworth with Hilda but only found minimal artist research.
8th October 2020
I began experimenting with collage. After doing the decoupage box, I realised i quite enjoyed it but i hadn't thought i could also do collage for my project since it's quite a long and tedious process.

Despite that I've began experimenting with different techniques. Today I tried a sort of puzzle collage where the centre of the image is cut into small cubes and then rearranged to make a incomprehensible jumbled image.
the only thing i saw to be a bit of a problem was cutting the pieces into equal sizes. to do this i had to measure the length or the area i was going to cut then divide this.
unfortunately the cubes still came out a bit uneven however I know for the next attempt I need to be a bit more particular.
12th October 2020
Today I had a experimentative photoshoot. Using long exposure, I was able to create photos that ad a ghostly after shadow. A problem that i encountered was setting the correct ISO and shutter speed. I knew that I had to lower the shutter speed but how low is what i had to test. After a few trials i came to the shutter speed of 1 sometimes 2.5 that worked best to let enough light in .
Another challenge i had was figuring out when to move in order to have the stationary image as well as the moving shadow.
Initially i tested it on myself which was difficult since i couldn't press the shutter. to overcome this I used a model.Â
To improve this IÂ need a better lighting set up since in the dark it was extremely hard to capture the model.
I will be going to a photo studio and that will hopefully eliminate the problem i had with lighting.
12th October 2020
Following the photoshoot, I've used a few images i took to create another type of collage.
This collage requires more dismemberment only for me to jigsaw the pieces back together to make a person with many faces.Â
I liked that this technique gave the image a sense of timelessness since throughout the piece she is looking in multiple directions at once and its not possible to know where she started and where she finished looking. It also has feelings of confusion and displacement.
A problem i came across was that i thought i could just cut up the image and the piece it together but it was not that simple since the pieces were not fitting.
To overcome this I changed my method. instead I cut one piece and then placed it on top of the image to trace the edge. this worked a lot better.
16th October 2020
I had been wavering between looking at the flow of time or life and death. I've at last decided on life on death and within that topic im focusing on the duality of it. my aim for today is to try out some new collage techniques. I think my experimentation went well. I'm still a little lost on how to take this project further but but i am not discouraged.

Today was an interim assessment and I was able to identify gaps within the project that I need to do.
My next steps include preparing for a photoshoot on Wednesday and relevant photography artist research.

17th October 2020
artist research - franchesca woodman
After talking to the tutors I was able to get a lot of photography artists to research. The one in particular i focused on was francesca woodman. Her ghostly images and use of props have given me inspiration for my next set of photographs.
19th October 2020
Following on from the interim assessment I had on Friday, I plan to do more artist research to inspire me for my photoshoot on wednesday to further inform my theme. I will also be looking at the context on duality as i feel i need to
have a better grasp on the topic.
20th October
Final planning for tomorrow. I will be doing some sketches of photographs I'd like to execute tomorrow. I'm a bit nervous since I have never used a photography studio before however I'll try my best to make the most of it.
21st October
Today I will be going to Northenden College. I am to take 15- 30 images so that i can pick the best 5-10 photos. I've brought a light fabric and mirror to use as props for my duality theme. Also since there are restrictions in place i can only use my family members as models.
22nd October
Reflecting on yesterday's photoshoot. I dont think it went as well as i hoped. The ideas i had difficulty executing them. Also I'm new to directing people so for next time I can work on that.
Also next time i would use different models and the clothing i would change to fit more into the theme. Woodman used to wear vintage, timeless clothing and i think i could possibly to similar. like wearing flowy dress so that they'll leave a trail when i do long exposure. I will be editing the photos today to see if there are any i can save.

After editing the photos I have come across a few I like because i was able to capture a mysterious atmosphere and the long exposure turned out well.
HOLIDAY
26th-30th October
spent the week researching university courses and options. Also started personal statement. I need to start with a digital portfolio soon.
2nd November
feeling stuck. had a discussion and some feedback. went back to the design cycle to evaluate my work and see what didn't work with my photos from northenden so that i can get moving again. I've also anaylsed my collages a bit more to see how i can improe them. I think I'd like to add text to some.
7th November
LCC open day online. very informative, i listened to presentations on creating a digital portfolio since interviews will be online possibly because of the pandemic. also on writing a personal statement, student finance and accommodation since I want to move out so i can focus on the degree.
9th November
my aim today is to do some artist research. After evaluating the photos I took at Northenden I feel a little less stuck and think that learning other techniques will help me move my project along. I will be looking at Germain's photographs
I think I'd like to create a series of photos but if not I want to turn them into oil paintings.
I'm discovering many other themes for duality that pique my interest. One was the duality between reality and virtual world and how with social media- how we create personas( online identities) that are separate from our real life. What are the dangers when it starts to seep into our reality and you can no longer separate the two?
--
After looking at Germain's photography I thin kI'd like to be more abstract within my work. I'm going to experiment with a few sketches to see if i can come up with some compositions and symbols.

I also have an virtualopenday so I will be tuning into that at 3pm.
26th November
today i plan ondoing a bobby neal artist response, Stezaker response and Aaron Sisman response. also, ive brought my camera to take photos with a large golden frame.
