Initial Statement of Intent
After thinking on the theme of ' flow of time' and 'life and death'. I started to think about how the two are opposites but they are interdependent. That's how I came across the Taoism ideology of duality. I've decided to investigate how duality applies to the three stages of time and passage of time. I want to see how we can apply this ideology to current sociopolitical issues and also how it could apply to me as a developing artist.

In the simplest form, Duality teaches us that every aspect of life is created from a balanced interaction of opposite and competing, yet complementary forces.

I found the idea of collage to portray duality interesting as it would enable me to develop my compositional skills.
what really drew me to collage is the ability to create a new image by combining photos.
In order to ensure my explorations and outcomes are well informed I decided to collate my own images for inspiration as well as exploring the work of others.

Sleep can be described as a suspended state of consciousness, whereas death would be a permanent suspension of consciousness.

Sleep and death are brother-gods, according to the old Greek proverb—Hypnos and Thanatos.
Hypnos is the god of sleep and dreams, whilst Thanatos is the god of death.

DUALITY IN COLLAGE

IN YOUR PLACE
Using an old found image, I started my collage experimentation by simply removing one of the figures in the drawing and replacing it with an 18th-century wallpaper.
With the composition, I planned on doing two separate cutouts but realised that when the two images were beside one another it communicated the experience of physically being somewhere yet 'spiritually' elsewhere.

JANUS
After creating this collage, whilst researching I came across the Roman god Janus.Â
He is usually depicted having two faces- one facing the past and the other facing the future.
I thought the designs similar until I realised my model was looking directly into the camera, to symbolise the 'present'.
