PHOTOSHOOT

First Take

My first studio visit, planning, research and outcome.

LIGHTING

Backlighting to shroud subject in shadow.

Contre-jour. It is French for ‘against daylight’, the camera is directly pointing towards the light source which is behind the subject. The effect produces high contrast photos between light and dark. It hides details yet emphasizes contour of the subject and shapes, resulting in cinematic and ambient scenes.

SUBJECT

Due to covid I have reduced amount of subjects I can photograph together in one space.

I will be photographing my mum and sister since they are in a support bubble and we still comply with current regulations.

Thankfully it's still relevant to my theme because I have a older and younger subject. Who is closer to death?

EVALUATION

This series of photographs, inspired by photographer Francesca Woodman, capture indefinite movement. Using photography opposed to video in order to capture movement produces the unique effect of trapping a subject in eternity. Although the medium is inanimate, the subject creates a journey with their movements that seem to have no starting or ending point. I wanted to capture flowing movements which i did by getting my model to dance with a light chiffon fabric. overall, i believe i achieved what I set out to do. And for my theme, i think i expressed the qualities of yin an yang within the photo. The ghostly after shadows gestures that have a soft presence which is complemented by the dark body (yin) that dominates the image (yang). There's a balanced interaction between movement and stillness within the images.

This is further emphasised by deliberately choosing to edit the photos in grey-scale, similar to Francesca Woodman. I wanted distinct contrast between light and dark and it also aided in stronger silhouettes.

compared to my last set of photos, I think these were executed better and portrayed my theme much better.

What I'd like to do next is experiment with lighting and props.
